Douglas Steiner changed his plans for an East Village residential project to market-rate condominium units. The developer previously proposed to construct rentals with an affordable component on the site.

Steiner bought the site at 435 East 11th Street in 2012 for $41 million and tore down the 96-year-old Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. Steiner’s original plans, filed in October 2013, called for a seven-story, 158-unit rental building including 22 affordable units, according to EV Grieve.

Those plans have changed, according to presentation given to Community Board 3 on Tuesday night. Steiner is now planning 82 market-rate condos. According to the website, area residents were already concerned about the size of this project but were appeased by the affordable component. One neighbor called the switch “total bullshit.” [EV Grieve] — Tess Hofmann
